Leverage a closed Facebook group and build it as a digital "chamber of commerce". Cory Barnes has some fantastic training that walks you through setting this up. An incredible way to stay in touch with your own clients using postcards AND it's a great system to pass along to customers who would benefit from direct mail. I personally know the owner (built a window cleaning business and sold it) and have this software for my own business. (Affiliate Link)
If you want to be recognized as THE best marketer in your local town, a directory is an excellent way to achieve this. With the loss of local newspapers and Yellow pages, residents will use a local directory and this puts you in touch with all the local business owners. (Affiliate Link)

Neither did I when I got started (other than how to design). Everything else is a learning process, but can be picked up quickly through some of training. The more important question to ask - am I motivated enough to make this work? Because if you are, this can be a very successful business.
I would purchase a couple of the training programs at the top of this page and spend a few days going over everything so you have a good handle on the basics. Then if you need more help, write down all of your questions and let's do an hour consultation. A small investment to get started and you'll have everything you need to do some selling. Join some of FB groups in those programs is a good place to ask questions to fill in the gaps too.
It certainly helps if you are planning on using templates to create your ads. Your customers will expect a good design of their ad and no one wants to look at a terrible ad. You can always outsource the designs and concentrate on the other parts of your business, freeing you of time to focus on sales.
I started with the 9x12 because I felt that if I was going to sell 15 spaces or so, I wanted the most profit for my time. New movers, directory cards, or birthday cards certainly have a easier selling point, but they aren't as profitable. If you aren't comfortable with selling and want to ease into it, I would suggest the new movers or a smaller postcard with less spaces to sell.
All of that is in the training and if you need more help, I offer consulting to walk you through it step by step. It is a little intimidating at first, but once you do it, it is really very simple. Postcards are simple for your customers to understand too - they just want to know how many postcards are being mailed, what area they are being mailed to, and what the price is. You handle all the rest.
Send me an email at Scott@Postcards101.com and we can go from there. I use a simple online system so we can communicate about artwork, revisions, and proofing. I'm here to help you succeed however I can!
